this is called Tiki. The exaggerated romantic fascination of exotic cultures and fantasies of tropical islands form the concept of Tiki. It is basically a design aesthetic, which represents or symbolizes an idealized way
of life. In present times businessmen have created an impression and approximation for landlocked people. The Tiki concept actually does not exist. Now a Tiki bar means a bar with Tiki in it.
History of Tiki
Bar
During the golden age of travel, shortly before World War I, transportation voyages by many Americans and Europeans well-to-do people became a rage. Destinations to far South Seas were most sought after. Tiki Bar
evolved from this fascination of exploring South Seas. There was a race to open new nightclubs and bars with south sea and pacific flavour. Don Beach, the founder of Don the Beachcomber restaurants opened his first
restaurant in 1934. That was just two blocks away from Seven Seas, opened by Bob Brooks. Don the Beachcomber is credited with developing the present form of Tiki Bar. He added many new features to create Tiki effect like
idol figures, articrafts, starfish, fishing floats, etc. Thus, history was made by Don as he introduced Tiki to the bar. A concept, a drink, a menu, and a soundtrack were the mandatory contents of a Tiki Bar. Everywhere
Tiki Bars propped up all around the places.
Decline and Present state of Tiki Bars
Tiki Bars became a rage in1960s. Tiki then leaving the bar entered motels, strip clubs, massage parlors and mini golf clubs. In
Texas there is even an entire town based on Tiki. But like all other fads, Tiki also died. It lasted 30 long years, more than any other fad. Exotica was replaced by Rock and Roll music and a new culture of pubs, disco and
lounges came in. Though in California Tiki is inherited as part of life, it has been lost in other parts. But as the popular saying goes that popular cultures recycle themselves, it is evitable to see that Tiki is making a come back.
